A Guide to Kitchen Organization

Just as they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, the kitchen can be considered the most important room in the house. Its use is unavoidable, every member of the family spends time in it, and it is often the cornerstone for family gatherings and festive occasions. Even if gourmet cooking isn’t your thing, you more than likely still spend a good amount of time in your kitchen. For all these reasons and more, it is very important to have a well-organized kitchen. Planning and executing a large meal is stressful enough by itself-imagine what it is like if your counters are a mess and you can't keep track of your cooking utensils! No matter what size your kitchen is, from teeny tiny to large and sprawling, there are many easy and effective ways to stay organized.

Short on Space
If your kitchen is small and lacking of
a pantry or island, there are many ways to
implement storage while also
dressing up your space! The first cardinal rule of small kitchen storage is utilizing vertical space. Chances are, you have at least one wall in your kitchen that can be used for extra storage. Install shelves in an otherwise unused area, such as above the sink, and you’ve just found a way to store and display dishware or food items. Pegboards are also an extremely clever way to hang multiple items in a very small amount of space. Plus, no more rifling through drawers to find smaller items such as measuring spoons.

                                                                                    Medium-Sized Kitchen
If you have a little more room to spare, you may not need to be as dependent on vertical space. While cabinets and shelving units are always a fantastic way to store and display your kitchenware, having a little bit of extra floor space in the kitchen allows for a plethora of other options. One such choice for a medium sized kitchen is a multifunctional, standalone unit. Kitchen carts come in all shapes and sizes, and are a fantastic alternative to the traditional built-in island. A wood surfaced kitchen cart with wheels serves multiple roles: cutting board, storage area, and portable serving station! If you want something a little more unique, try converting an old dresser into a lovely makeshift island. All you really need is some paint and a few hooks, and you've added so much storage space to your kitchen, as well as a focal centerpiece.

Sizable Storage
If your house is equipped with a large kitchen, the possibilities are essentially endless. It becomes less about finding room for everything, and more about organizing it in a helpful and aesthetically pleasing fashion. If you have a lot of empty space in your kitchen, bring the pantry out into the open! Bookshelf style shelving is a creative and attractive way to keep your food and cooking items structured and close at hand. And as an added bonus, you’ve freed up pantry space that you can now use to store less desirable items such as cleaning supplies or Tupperware.
