The Importance of the Front Door

Your front door is the entryway into your home, and in turn to the personality of you and your family. Although it is often overlooked, choosing a color for your front door that suits your house is a very important step in the home design process. The color of your front door is often the first thing that guests will see when arriving at your home, and it has the ability to leave a lasting impression on them. There are many routes you could take when deciding a color and style for your front door, but there are a few fundamentals to consider beforehand.

Front Door Basics
When deciding on what color to paint your front door, you may automatically stray towards your favorite color, whatever that may be. This can be dangerous when you consider how it will look with the rest of your home. While the front door can certainly stand out, it still needs to be cohesive with the rest of your home. A first step, then, is thinking about how the front door will look next to the other exterior features of your house: color, siding, windows, trim, decorations, etc. Once you have a framework for which colors work and which colors do not, then you can move on and decide what kind of statement you would like to make with your front door.

Keep it Natural
A classic selection for a front door is to display its natural color. If you have a wooden door that matches well with the rest of your home, why not leave it as is? A darker colored wood door contrasts amazingly well with a lighter exterior paint color, and really makes the door stand out. If you are happy with the natural look but still are feeling like you want a change, staining the wood is always an excellent option.

Nice and Light
A lighter shade for a front door gives off the impression of a warm and inviting home. There are so many lighter variations of colors that look excellent on a front door. The lighter shades look great with plants or other landscaping, and finding outdoor decorations and accents is simple as the lighter tones are quite easy to match. A favorite for a lighter colored front door is a house that is painted gray-the gray will make the color on the door pop without having to get too bright.

Go Bold
A bright red door can be found on almost any street. A bright, bold color for a front door is another great option, and provides instant insight into the nature of your home. A bright door indicates a bright personality, and welcomes others into your home. While the red door is certainly a staple, almost any bold color can be utilized for a front door paint job. Reds and blues look great with brick built homes, whereas greens and yellows are better suited for white or cream colored homes. If your house is already painted a bright color, you can still go with a bold colored door! As long as the two colors do not clash, it will still look amazing, and often times opposing colors actually complement each other.

Beyond the Color
While the color of your door is very important, it is not the only consideration. The material, style, and design of your door are vital factors in cultivating the perfect entryway. If you are satisfied with the color of your door but something is still missing, a unique design may be the way to go. You can add window frames, molding, different doorknobs, stained glass, and so many other features so make your door truly original.

Choosing the Perfect Bathroom Color

While it may not seem like it, creating the perfect bathroom can actually get quite complicated. There are so many factors that go into it: flooring, counter tops, cabinets, tile-the list could go on and on. If you’re looking to update your bathroom, sometimes the best place to start is with a fresh coat of paint. Painting your bathroom a new color is one of the simplest modifications, yet it can create a world of change.  Often times all it takes is a fresh look to make you feel as if you’ve transformed your entire bathroom. But how do you decide which color to choose?

Back to Basics with Beige
The classic look for a bathroom is a neutral tone such as light beige. Choosing a soft, modest color such as this gives you a traditional look, and enables you to take the decorating motif in a number of directions, incorporating many different colors and designs throughout. There are various shades of beige and tan that will give your bathroom a clean and homey feel.

                                                                                    Classic Gray Tones
Another instant classic for bathroom wall colors are gray tones. From a light gray to a deep charcoal, theses shades give off a cool, crisp feel to your bathroom. Gray matches very well with white, black, or hardwood cabinets, leaving you with a number of options for furnishing the rest of your bathroom. No matter which shade you decide on, gray walls will transform your bathroom into a sleek and modern space.

Colorful Considerations
If you want something a little more unique, consider going for a colorful look! A colorful bathroom is perfect for a half bath or a kid’s bathroom, but would still look great in a full or master bath. When going with something brighter, there are a few questions to consider: Will there be any contrast between colors? Do I want to paint the whole bathroom, or just an accent wall? Will this color be a part of a larger theme? One important factor to consider is not to go too bright. Softer tones such as teal or coral are perfect to maintain a sense of calm while still bringing a pop of color into your bathroom.

A Plethora of Patterns
One last option for your bathroom walls is to add a design. This could be a hand painted original, or through the use of wallpaper. Adding a design can take your bathroom many places, from fun and quirky, to elegant and sophisticated. Painting your own wall design brings an extremely personal touch to your home. And if that doesn’t work, the options are endless when it comes to wallpaper. There is truly a design out there for anyone, no matter how specific their tastes may be.
